Sunset Point at Cedar Key

Cedar Key, Florida

60 RV Sites

On the waterfront in Cedar Key, Florida—one of the Gulf Coast's most authentic, least-developed, and most stubbornly independent small cities—Sunset Point RV Resort delivers full hookup sites where the Gulf of Mexico is the view, the sound of the water is the soundtrack, and the sunsets are so reliably spectacular that they have become the town's most celebrated daily event. Cedar Key's position on a cluster of low limestone islands surrounded by the third largest estuary on the Gulf Coast means the sky here is wide, the water is everywhere, and the light at the end of the day comes across miles of open water and tidal flat in colors that reward anyone willing to pause and look. Full hookup sites provide 30 and 50-amp electric service alongside water, sewer, and high-speed WiFi that supports both the remote worker seeking Gulf Coast escape and the retiree on an extended waterfront stay. A brand-new pickleball court gives active guests a competitive outlet, and a community fire pit creates the evening gathering space that waterfront camping naturally generates. Kayaking and boating launch opportunities from the resort put the surrounding estuary's mangrove channels and tidal flats immediately accessible—a paddling environment teeming with bottlenose dolphins, manatees, ospreys, roseate spoonbills, and the shore and wading birds that make Cedar Key one of Florida's premier birding destinations. The pet-friendly property accommodates the traveling dogs who, like their owners, tend to find Cedar Key difficult to leave. Cedar Key sits 50 miles southwest of Gainesville on Florida's Big Bend coast where the Gulf coastline turns westward from its southward run—one of the least developed stretches of Florida shoreline remaining, protected partly by the shallow, reef-free water that discourages recreational boat traffic and partly by the National Wildlife Refuge system that controls most of the surrounding islands. The town's own history is layered with timber and pencil-industry boom and bust, commercial oystering and clamming, and the kind of civic character that develops in a place accessible only by a single road and surrounded by water in every direction. Cedar Key's historic downtown on Dock Street anchors the town's visitor experience with independent seafood restaurants serving the locally farmed clam chowder and smoked mullet that are the area's culinary signature, art galleries featuring the local painting tradition that has made Cedar Key an artists' colony since George Inness Jr. worked here in the 19th century, and the Cedar Key Museum State Park documenting the city's remarkable industrial history. Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge, accessible by boat, protects the surrounding islands and their extraordinary bird rookeries. The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge to the north adds additional paddling and wildlife observation territory. Sunset Point operates year-round in Cedar Key's subtropical climate, with the town's cooler, drier winter season from November through April generally considered the finest time to visit—when the air is cool, the crowds are manageable, and the birding is at its best as wintering populations join the resident species. Spring brings the water warming and the transition to summer's warmer but still beautiful waterfront days. The lack of beach and absence of theme parks keeps Cedar Key authentic and relatively uncrowded even in peak season. Reserve your waterfront site at Sunset Point and let Cedar Key's sunsets, seafood, and estuary wildlife remind you what Florida was before the crowds discovered it.
